About the Role
We are looking for a COBOL Developer Lead with strong expertise in legacy system programming, transaction processing applications, and business logic extraction. This role is crucial for modernizing COBOL-based applications by integrating Raincode and decision modeling systems, ensuring a seamless transition from legacy systems to modern IT frameworks.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for analyzing existing COBOL applications, extracting business logic, and translating it into rule-based programming frameworks to drive digital transformation initiatives. The role also requires team leadership skills, as the selected candidate will guide junior developers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve performance and scalability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legacy System Modernization & Business Logic Extraction
- Analyze legacy COBOL applications to identify core business logic and critical dependencies.
- Extract, document, and convert legacy business logic into rule-based engines or decision modeling systems.
- Ensure smooth modernization and migration of existing systems to updated platforms.
2. COBOL Development & Integration
- Develop, enhance, and maintain COBOL-based transaction processing applications.
- Work with Raincode to integrate COBOL applications into modern environments.
- Optimize legacy code performance and refactor applications to improve efficiency and scalability.
3. Team Collaboration & Leadership
- Work closely with business analysts, process teams, and IT teams to gather functional and technical requirements.
- Mentor junior developers and guide them in best practices for legacy programming.
- Provide technical insights and participate in strategic discussions for legacy system enhancements.
4. Technical Documentation & Compliance
- Document business logic, system workflows, and integration processes for future reference.
- Ensure that coding standards, compliance requirements, and security protocols are maintained in legacy modernization projects.
Required Expertise
Programming Experience:
- 7+ years of professional experience in COBOL, PL/1, Assembler, RPG, or other legacy programming languages.
- Strong background in transaction processing applications with expertise in handling high-volume data transactions.
Legacy Systems & Integration:
- Hands-on experience working on legacy platforms like mainframe, AS400, Unix, Linux, Windows, or other proprietary enterprise systems.
- Experience integrating Raincode to modernize COBOL applications.
Problem-Solving & Leadership:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to debug, optimize, and enhance legacy applications.
- Ability to lead teams, mentor junior developers, and work in a cross-functional environment.
Technical Documentation & Compliance:
- Proficiency in documenting system processes, writing technical manuals, and maintaining compliance with enterprise security standards.
Preferred (Not Mandatory) Skills
- Business Rule Programming: Knowledge of decision management systems and business rule engines.
- Low-Code/No-Code Systems: Experience with OutSystems, Mendix, or Wavemaker for system transformation.
- Pre-Relational Databases: Familiarity with IDMS, Datacom, Adabas, and 4th-generation programming languages.
